Vacant Home Burns
Late last night at 11:06pm, crews were dispatched to a suspected brush fire in the vicinity of Queen Annes Court. Engine 10, Brush 10 and 101 responded. Upon arrival crews found a two story abandoned structure, fully involved in close proximity to the nearby townhomes. Station 10 quickly upgraded to a full structural assignment. The fire was quickly brought under control within one hour and was confined to the abandoned structure. One patient was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and transported to a local hospital. Crews remained on-scene for over 5 hours extinguishing hotspots.
Units from Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department, Isle of Wight County Fire Rescue, City of Suffolk Department of Fire & Rescue, Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office, Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad, Virginia State Police were on-scene & Rushmere Volunteer Fire Dept provided stand-by to support the community while resources were tied up.
The structure involved was built in the late 1800’s with several additions over time. It had been vacant for some years.
