Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched 4:08 p.m. 12 April 2017 to a report of “…tires on fire behind Carrollton Metals...” on Brewer’s Neck Blvd. Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Deputies arrived and advised that a controlled burn of old tires had “…got out of hand.” Carrollton and Smithfield VFD units arrived quickly to find a large pile of several thousand burning rubber tires. The rising column of heavy black smoke was visible from several miles away. Fire attack crews quickly deployed hand lines to protect exposures to power lines, adjacent trees as well as vehicles and structures on the property and adjacent businesses. At 4:59 p.m. Isle of Wight Emergency Services Chief J. Terwilliger assumed command of fireground operations and requested automatic and mutual aid apparatus and crews from Suffolk, Rushmere and Windsor. HAZMAT assistance was requested from the City of Portsmouth and also large capacity foam units from the City of Chesapeake. Brewer’s Neck Blvd. was closed to traffic in both directions to allow connection of five inch water supply lines to hydrants on the south side of the highway. Foam operations commenced at 6:10 p.m. VDOT and VSP units assisted Isle of Wight Sheriff’s deputies with traffic control. The fire was reported under control by 7 p.m. and all units were cleared from the scene by 9:11 p.m.
