Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at 4:02 a.m. Friday 25 March 2016 to assist Smithfield and Rushmere Volunteer Fire Departments at a reported “…structure fire…single story brick rancher...heavy fire showing…large propane tank in front…” in rural Isle of Wight County on Mill Swamp Road. Water tanker support was quickly requested from Windsor and Carrsville VFDs as well as Ivor, Surry and Chuckatuck. Adequate water supply was ensured by emplacing a drop tank on the primary hard surface road and conducting tanker shuttle operations using a hydrant in the town of Smithfield. Defensive operations were conducted to protect exposures because of the heavy volume of fire and a foam master stream was directed onto the propane tank to reduce risk to the firefighting crews. Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad crews and Isle of Wight Department of Emergency Services technicians provided primary medical standby and rehabilitation service. All occupants had safely exited the building and American Red Cross volunteers were called to provide emergency support to the residents. Community Electric Power and AmeriGas representatives were also called to the scene to assist as well a state fire investigator to determine the cause of the fire. Command was terminated at 9:00 a.m. allowing all responding units to return to quarters.
