Carrollton (CVFD) and Smithfield (SVFD) Volunteer Fire Departments and Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad (IWVRS) were dispatched 7:01 a.m. Saturday 5 March 2016 to a reported structure fire on Windsor Avenue in Smithfield, Virginia. Carrollton VFD apparatus Engine-10 and Quint-10 with volunteer firefighting crews responded immediately along with Engines 50 and 51 from SVFD. Smithfield Police Department units arriving on scene first reported heavy smoke showing from the rear of the structure, all occupants out but possibly two victims with smoke injuries. Engine 51 crew arrived on scene quickly, deployed a 5 inch water supply line from a nearby hydrant and made an aggressive interior fire attack using hand lines from the engine. Two ambulance units from IWVRS arrived rapidly, immediately initiated patient care and transported the two patients to the closest hospital ED. Carrollton and Smithfield firefighting crews under the command of SVFD Assistant Chief J. Hackney extinguished the fire and conducted extensive overhaul operations. CVFD Chief B. Johnston commanded the CVFD crews. A Dominion Power representative arrived to secure the electrical supply and a red Cross representative came to arrange accommodation and other emergency needs for the other occupants of the home. All emergency responders were clear from the scene and available by 10:00 a.m.
