Carrollton and Smithfield Volunteer Fire Departments conducted joint training in
vehicle extrication on a frigid Thursday 11 February 2016 at Station-10 in
Carrollton. Four derelict vehicles, donated by Dave’s Auto of Smithfield, were
available for members of both emergency response agencies to practice vehicle
stabilization and cutting skills. Instructors from the Carrollton and Smithfield
departments provided expert training and supervised practice for other firefighters
in the techniques of rescuing victims from badly damaged and overturned vehicles.
Responses to local motor vehicle collisions are a significant part of the mission of
both departments and crews must be skilled in rapid extrication of entrapped
patients. Both departments also possess the specialized rescue engines that carry
the on-board equipment enabling trained crews to quickly perform these emergency
tasks to save lives under all conditions.
