Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at 8:04 a.m. Sunday 2 November 2014 to a reported "...motor vehicle collision...with injuries...James River Bridge...northbound...3 vehicles involved...heavy damage..." Volunteer EMTs and firefighters in Carrollton VFD transport ambulance Medic-11, collision response apparatus Rescue-10 and first response unit Zone-11 responded quickly followed by fire pumper Engine-10 with additional manpower requested by incident command. Arriving on scene along with Newport News units responding from the city on the southbound span, Carrollton crews found three entrapped occupants and immediately initiated extrication operations with hydraulic cutting tools. Other vehicle occupants were provided immediate medical care and stabilized for transport. One patient was secured in M-11 and three others in NNFD ambulances for rapid transport to the closest trauma center. Carrollton volunteers remained on scene to assist with HAZMAT control and vehicle recovery operations. Virginia State Police and Isle of Wight Sheriff's Deputies were on scene for traffic control and investigation/reporting protocols. All Carrollton units were released by law enforcement by 9:22 a.m. to be available for further emergency deployment.
