Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at 10:48 a.m. Tuesday 28 October 2014 to a reported "...vehicle vs. bicyclist..." on Benn's Church Blvd. northbound about one half mile south of Benn's Church. Carrollton VFD transport ambulance Squad-10 with a combined volunteer/Isle of Wight Emergency Services crew and collision response engine Rescue-10 responded immediately from Brewer's Neck Blvd having just completed fire safety classes at Benn's Church pre-school. Arriving on scene, the EMTs and firefighters found one patient in critical condition who had been struck by a car while traveling north along Route-10. Immediate advanced life support (ALS) medical care stabilized the patient and Nightingale Air Ambulance was requested to launch from Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Medic unit M-63 from Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad (IWVRS) also arrived to provide additional ALS support. The patient was then transported quickly in S-10 to the nearest landing zone adjacent to the IWVRS building in Smithfield, Virginia. Crews from the Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department conducted LZ operations and the patient was then rapidly transferred from S-10 to the air ambulance for transport to the closest Level-I trauma center. Isle of Wight Sheriff's Deputies and Virginia State Police units arrived for traffic control, investigation and reporting protocols. S-10 was then taken to Belle Harbor ER for restocking of medical equipment and all fire/rescue units were cleared and available for further service by 11:32 a.m.
