Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at 5:43 a.m. Thursday 18 September 2014 to a reported "...four vehicle overturned...James River Bridge..." on the southbound span. Newport News FD was also dispatched and arrived to protect the scene and begin patient care. Carrollton volunteers in ambulance unit Squad-10 and first response engine Quint-10 responded immediately and arrived on scene quickly because the collision was near the Isle of Wight County end of the bridge. Initial patient medical assessment identified two trauma patients who were stabilized and secured in S-10 for transport. A third patient was identified and Carrollton VFD's other transport ambulance Medic-11 was called forward onto the bridge from a standby location at the south foot of the span. All three patients were transported to the closest trauma center in S-10 and M-11 while Q-10 remained for scene protection on the northbound span. The JRB was closed at River Road in Newport News to limit the amount of southbound traffic on the bridge. Q-10 was released by scene command at 6:21 a.m. to return to Carrollton via the Monitor-Merrimack Bridge Tunnel. NNFD transported a fourth patient from the scene in ambulance unit 710 and a fifth patient from a second MVC involving a motorcycle on the southbound JRB span. All Carrollton units were available fur further service by 7:43 a.m.
