Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at 8:56 a.m. Friday 5 September 2014 to a reported "...accident with injuries...two vehicles...in front of Village Store..." on Carrollton Blvd. Isle of Wight Emergency Services technicians in ambulance unit Squad-10 and volunteers in collision response apparatus Rescue-10, transport ambulance Medic-11 and area command unit Zone-10 responded immediately from Station-10 and arrived on scene quickly. Virginia State Police and Isle of Wight Sheriff's Deputies were also dispatched to control traffic and initiate investigation and reporting procedures. First arriving unit advised "...heavy damage...head-on collision..." and Carrollton EMTs assisted by volunteer firefighters initiated immediate medical trauma care protocols for the occupants of both vehicles. Two patients were transported in S-10 and M-11 to the closest Level-II ED trauma center. One lane of Route-17 was opened to northbound traffic at 9:15 a.m. as R-10 and Z-10 remained on scene to assist with scene protection, HAZMAT control and vehicle recovery operations. Both northbound lanes were opened at 9:55 a.m. and all Carrollton VFD units were cleared and available for further service by 10:12 a.m. to return to quarters.
