Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at 1240 p.m. Monday 25 August 2014 to a reported "...two vehicles...head on..." on Carrollton Blvd. at the intersection with Ashby Way. Transport ambulance Squad-10 with an Isle of Wight Emergency Services (IOWES) crew and collision response engine Rescue-10 with a volunteer crew responded immediately from Station-10 as well as other volunteer EMTs in response vehicles Zone-10 and Chief-10. First arriving unit reported two patients with one entrapment and requested ambulance assistance from Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad (IWVRS) and heavy vehicle rescue response from Smithfield Vol. Fire Dept.(SVFD) The R-10 crew also requested Nightingale Air Ambulance be launched and initiated immediate rescue procedures for the entrapped driver using hydraulic extrication tools (aka "jaws of life") and directed the IWVRS ambulance upon arrival to begin patient care for the occupant of the second vehicle. Carrollton VFD ambulance unit Medic-11 also responded bringing additional manpower support. A Chuckatuck VFD officer stopped to assist and IOWES unit ES-3 also arrived. The patient was extricated quickly and placed in S-10 for transport to a nearby landing zone. Volunteers in Carrollton Engine-10 established the LZ in a field adjacent to Carrollton Post Office to direct the helicopter landing. The IWVRS ambulance transported the second patient to the nearest ED as the Nightingale crew transferred the more seriously injured patient from S-10 to the helicopter for transport to the closest level I trauma center. Isle of Wight Sheriff's deputies and Virginia State Police units arrived to begin investigation and reporting procedures as well as traffic control operations. Command was terminated at 1:31p.m. and all Carrollton, SVFD, IWVRS and IOWES units returned to quarters.
