Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department first response vehicle Zone-11 with volunteer Fire Captain T. Nunez and firefighter/EMT P. Matteson responded "automatic aid" to a reported "...accident unknown..." in the vicinity of St. Luke's Historic Shrine on Route-10 at 1:31 p.m. Tuesday 5 August 2014. Smithfield Vol. Fire Dept. (SVFD) and Isle of Wight Vol. Rescue Squad (IWVRS) responded as the "first due" agencies for the reported scene of the accident. The Z-11 crew reported "nothing found" in the area of St. Luke's and proceeded south along Benn's Church Blvd. to investigate farther. The Z-11 crew then reported a "...dump truck overturned..." near the historic ca. 1856 "Jordan House" on Rte.-10 and assumed incident command because the scene was actually in Carrollton VFD's first response district. SVFD and IWVRS units Rescue-50, Engine-53 and Medic-60 arrived on scene quickly to find the driver out of the vehicle, ambulatory and uninjured. Virginia State Police (VSP) units and VDOT crews arrived to control and reroute traffic and also to initiate investigative procedures. Northbound Rte-10 traffic was detoured onto Muddy Cross drive for about three hours until vehicle recovery operations were complete. Carrollton VFD command was terminated at 3:08 p.m. when the scene was turned over to the VSP.
