Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at 10:48 p.m. Tuesday 8 July 2014 to a reported "...multi-vehicle collision... front of Raceway (convenience store)...unknown injuries..." on Route-17 near the James River Bridge in Carrollton, Va. Volunteer crews in Rescue-10, Medic-11, Zone-10, Chief-10 along with several volunteers in POVs responded quickly to the scene and Isle of Wight Rescue Squad was requested to dispatch an ambulance because Carrollton ambulance Squad-10 was not in service due to maintenance. Fire Captain T. Nunez arrived first, reported "...moderate least one patient..." and advised IWVRS Medic-63 to continue as back-up. Several vehicle occupants were given immediate medical care and one patient was transported in M-11 to the closest trauma center. R-10 crew and other volunteers remained on scene to assist with HAZMAT mitigation, clean-up, vehicle recovery and traffic control operations until cleared at 00:06 a.m. 9 July by Isle of Wight Sheriff's Deputies and Virginia State Police units.
