Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched 1:13 a.m. Sunday 29 June 2014 to a reported "vehicle vs. poll...heavy damage....power lines down" on Smiths Neck Road in Carrollton near Yellow Rock Lane. Carrollton VFD volunteers in vehicle rescue/pumper Rescue-10 and transport ambulance Squad-10 responded from Station-10 along with Chief-10 and other volunteers in POVs from home. Arriving on scene within minutes, S-10 crew reported finding "patient ejected," immediately initiated trauma medical procedures and requested to know the availability of Nightingale Air Ambulance service. The patient was quickly stabilized, placed in S-10 for transport and started for the closest Trauma Center. (Ground transport was assessed to be quicker than air due to proximity to Emergency Dept., clear roads, good weather, no JRB lift and lack of highway traffic at 1:30 a.m.) Virginia State Police and Isle of Wight Sheriffs units arrived quickly to assist with traffic control, investigation and reporting protocols. Indications were that the vehicle had left the road off the right shoulder traveling west, sheared off a power pole (with transformer) at the base, overturned and rolled multiple times for several hundred feet through the front yard of a nearby home before coming to rest upright and back up on the roadway. The patient had been ejected about half way along the vehicle's off-road path. R-10 and crew along with law enforcement remained on scene until 4 a.m. to assist with vehicle recovery, clean-up and scene security operations due to the downed power lines. Smiths Neck Road remained closed to all traffic until Dominion Power crews were able to replace the pole and restore power at approximately 10 a.m.
