Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at 1:51 p.m. Wednesday 25 June 2014 to a reported "metals fire" at Carrollton Metals, Inc. recycling yard off Brewers Neck Blvd. Carrollton VFD Engine-10 responded from Station-10 with a volunteer crew and other volunteers responded to the scene in POVs. Carrollton VFD ambulance Squad-10 with an ALS crew responded to this potential HAZMAT incident from the vicinity of Obici Hospital while returning from a medical transport call. E-10 arrived on scene quickly and the crew rapidly deployed hand lines to suppress heavy flame coming from a pile of scrap metal near the center of the open yard. A rapid knock-down was achieved but heavy black smoke persisted from fire seated deep inside the scrap pile. The S-10 crew arrived and deployed a second hand line using foam on the flank of the fire which was now contained to the center of the pile. Smithfield VFD mutual aide was requested from Station-50 and Engine-52 arrived with a crew to assist. The fire was declared out at 2:19 p.m. but extensive overhaul operations continued using a heavy material handling excavator operated by a Carrollton Metals employee. All apparatus and crews were cleared from the scene and available by 2:31 p.m.
