Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched automatic aide at 1:57 a.m. Tuesday, 24 June 2014 to a reported "structure fire" in the Red Oaks Mobile Home Park on Benns Church Blvd., Isle of Wight County in the Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department (SVFD) first response district. SVFD units Engine-50, Engine-52 and Carrollton VFD Engine-10 responded immediately. IoW Central Dispatch advised "all occupants out" as SVFD volunteer 505 was first on scene, assumed command and reported "smoke and fire showing - entire structure." Water tanker units were requested from Rushmere VFD (Station-30) and Chuckatuck (Suffolk Station-9) for water supply because the neighborhood is in a non-hydranted area. E-50 arrived at 2:03 and the crew began an aggressive fire attack that quickly brought the fire under control. Carrollton VFD E-10 arrived at 2:06 and the crew assisted with fire control operations, water supply and overhaul. Units Tanker-30, Tanker-9, Truck-50 and Engine-53 arrived to assist with water supply and additional personnel support. American Red Cross representatives were summoned to provide shelter and basic living supplies for two adults and four children. Dominion Power engineer arrived to secure electrical power supply and Virginia State Police arson investigator was requested. Carrollton VFD and other mutual/automatic aide units were released at 2:38 a.m. and by 5:43 the fire was determined to be "accidental...caused by a candle." Remaining SVFD fire units were cleared and available by 5:45 a.m.
