Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched "automatic aid" at 3:28 p.m. Monday (Memorial Day Holiday), 26 May 2014 to a reported "structure fire" on Muddy Cross Drive near Turner Drive, Isle of Wight County, Va. Smithfield Volunteer Fire Dept. (SVFD) units Engines-50, 52 and 53 responded quickly from the Town of Smithfield. Carrollton VFD unit Quint-10 with a crew of four responded from Carrollton Station-10. Heavy smoke was reported visible from one mile away prompting SVFD Fire Chief J. Stallings to request tanker support from Rushmere Station-30, Windsor Station-40 and Suffolk Station-9 in Chuckatuck for water supply. Chuckatuck Engine-9 also responded and arrived to assist pumping operations. Immediate and close-in fire attack operations were prevented by numerous reports of exploding ammunition within the structure. Fire suppression operations commenced immediately upon establishment of water supply and the fire was quickly brought under control once sufficient water was made available. Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad crews conducted rehabilitation operations and provided stand-by medical support. Carrollton crews and Q-10 remained on scene to assist until 6:56 p.m. when cleared by SVFD command. Virginia State Police were called to investigate and Community Electric was requested to terminate power to the structure. SVFD crews continued overhaul and recovery operations past 10 p.m. before returning to Smithfield.
