Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched 6:17 a.m. Friday 25 April 2014 to an "accident with injuries" on Reynolds Drive near Osborne Lane in Carrollton, Va. Carrollton VFD units Medic-11 and Engine-10 responded immediately by disengaging as escorts for the ongoing "March for Babies" parade along Rte-17 near Eagle Harbor. An Isle of Wight Sheriff's Deputy arrived on scene first and reported "entrapment, driver conscious." Assistant Chief Rawls and Fire Captain Hubbard as well as Carrollton VFD vehicle rescue unit Rescue-10 and Zone-11 with volunteer crews responded rapidly. E-10 established scene protection as M-11 arrived first and reported "car against tree, heavy damage" while the crew assumed patient care. Incident Command was established by Chief Rawls and R-10 and Z-11 volunteer crews under the operational command of Captain Hubbard initiated vehicle stabilization and patient extrication operations. Nightingale Air Ambulance was alerted for possible deployment and Isle of Wight Central Dispatch confirmed that, if needed, the James River Bridge was clear with no scheduled lifts. Hydraulic vehicle extrication tools and the skilled crew enabled a successful patient extrication who was medically stabilized and secured in M-11 for transport. Virginia State Police units arrived to assist Isle of Wight Deputies with traffic control and reporting protocols. The patient was transported quickly to the nearest emergency trauma center while the R-10 crew remained on scene to assist vehicle recovery operations and clean-up. All Carrollton VFD units were cleared from the scene by 7:30 a.m.
