Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at 8:46 p.m. Friday 18 April 2014 to a reported "accident unknown" incident near the north foot of the "Sidney Bertram Hazelwood" Bridge over Chuckatuck Creek between Carrollton in Isle of Wight County and Eclipse in the City of Suffolk. Carrollton VFD transport ambulance Squad-10, vehicle-rescue engine Rescue-10 and fire chief's car Chief-10 responded immediately. Suffolk emergency response units were also dispatched. Due to the report of possible multiple subjects involved, Isle of Wight Vol. Rescue Squad Medic-61 was also requested. First arriving units were advised of possible ejection of person into the water and Carrollton VFD Fire Chief established incident command. Nightingale Air Ambulance, Smithfield Vol. Fire Dept. rescue Boat-50 and the U.S. Coast Guard were all alerted for possible deployment. Route-17 was closed to traffic from both directions. R-10 deployed it's floodlight tower to scan the surface of Chuckatuck Creek and foot search patrols were sent out along both shorelines. Chuckatuck VFD Boat-9 and the Virginia Marine Police were also requested to respond and Suffolk PD units assumed traffic control operations on the south side of the bridge. Nightingale could not launch due to adverse weather but at 9:28 p.m. the incident became a recovery operation. All in-bound assistance units including an en route USCG helicopter were cancelled and thanked for their rapid response. Carrollton VFD units including Engine-10 remained on scene to assist law enforcement and most units were cleared and available by 9:59 p.m. Chief-10 remained on scene as incident command and Carrollton VFD unit S-10 was re-dispatched to the scene for a "shock" patient at 11:23 p.m. and transported patient to the nearest Emergency Department.
