Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched 4:32 p.m. Thursday 3 April 2014 to a reported "brush fire" on Hargraves Drive in Carrollton, Va. near the intersection of Smiths Neck Road and Reynolds Drive. Carrollton VFD units Engine-10 and Brush-10 responded immediately with all-volunteer crews and other volunteer firefighters arrived by POV to assist. First arriving unit reported a wind driven "fire in the tree line" and requested mutual aide assistance from both Smithfield and Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Departments. Carrollton firefighters aggressively attacked the rapidly spreading fire from both flanks and quickly prevented further exposure to dry leaves on the forest floor. Chuckatuck VFD units were cancelled as the fire was brought under control by 4:47 p.m. and intensive overhaul operations continued back toward the initial ignition point of the fire. Virginia Forestry Unit One arrived to investigate and reported the fire had started by the "burning of substances that should not be burned." Command was terminated at 5:43 p.m. and all Carrollton and Smithfield units were cleared from the scene to return to quarters.
