Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) responded to a request from Principal Kevin Goetz of Carrollton Area Elementary School (CAES) to conduct basic fire safety classes for students in grades Pre-K through Second. At 10:30 a.m. Thursday 9 October 2014 the school conducted a fire drill evacuation exercise timed to the arrival of CVFD emergency first response fire and medical units with combined volunteer and Isle of Wight County Emergency Services crews. For two hours 350 students were rotated through the fire safety classes. Carrolton VFD provided instructional materials and "junior" firefighter helmets for the students paid for by donations from the Carrollton community. All Carrollton VFD firefighter and EMS personnel remained available for immediate dispatch during the classes in case of emergency medical or fire calls within the district. The 75 foot aerial ladder of unit Quint-10 was raised during the classes to show the students the capability of this apparatus. Classes were completed by 12:30 p.m. and all Carrollton units returned to quarters without incident.
