Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched 0805 Thursday 10 October 2013 to a motor vehicle collision at the south foot of the James River Bridge (JRB.) JRB Command reported "multiple injuries with an SUV, a 4 door sedan and one wrecker truck involved." Newport News Fire Department (NNFD) was requested to respond because the incident had occurred just off the southbound bridge span. Carrollton units Rescue-10 and Squad-10 responded immediately and arrived within minutes. NNFD Engine-7 and Medic-7 arrived across the southbound JRB span and assisted the Carrollton ALS crew with triage and initial patient care. When several patients were identified, Carrollton Medic-11 was also dispatched from Station-10 with a BLS crew. All medical care was transferred to Carrollton EMS crews and two patients were transported in S-10 and M-11 to the closest trauma center. Upon arrival at RRMC, the Carrollton EMS crews were met and assisted by their own department chaplain, Reverend Judy Worrell, who happened to be on duty in the ED at the time. Virginia State Police and Isle of Wight Sheriff's Officers also arrived on scene to investigate the accident and the R-10 crew remained until 0837 to assist. All Carrollton units were available for further service by 0937 and returned to quarters.
