Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department was alerted by a citizen about 9:28 p.m. Friday 31 May, 2013, who drove up to Station-10 and reported a multi-vehicle collision on Route-17 in the direction of the James River Bridge. Volunteers at the station responded immediately in Carrollton VFD units Rescue-10 and Medic-11 and located the scene about a mile north of Station-10 on Carrollton Blvd. at the intersection with Brewers Neck Blvd. Arriving units reported two vehicles involved with moderate damage, one off the road in a ditch, several injuries and one entrapment. Nightingale air ambulance crew was put on standby for possible response. R-10 and M-11 crews performed a rapid extrication operation and placed the most seriously injured patient in M-11. Carrollton officer B. Johnston arrived and assumed incident command. A second transport ambulance was requested from Isle of Wight VRS and Medic-65 arrived quickly with Zone-60 to assist with patient care. Carrollton VFD unit Engine-10 was dispatched at 2134 and arrived to secure the scene from oncoming traffic as R-10 was sent to establish a helicopter landing zone one mile north adjacent to Carrollton Blvd. at the Smith's Neck Road intersection. Medic-65 ALS crew decided to transport the most seriously injured patient to the nearest trauma center in M-11 and the air ambulance request was cancelled. A second ALS crew was requested from IWVRS and arrived quickly in Support-60 to assist with patient care and transport was accomplished in M-65. R-10 and E-10 remained on scene to assist IoW Sheriff's Officers with traffic control and help the wrecker service with scene clean-up. All Carrollton VFD and Isle of Wight VRS units were clear and available by 2345.
