Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched 0641 Thursday 4 April 2013 to a reported "chimney fire..." on Owen Farm Road in southern Carrollton and "...all people out of the residence." Smithfield VFD was also dispatched "automatic aide" in accordance with Isle of Wight County structure fire response protocol. Carrollton VFD units Car-10, Engine-10 and Rescue-10 responded along with Engine-50 from SVFD as well as several Carrollton volunteers in POVs. First arriving unit reported heavy smoke showing from the chimney of a single story brick residential ranch-style home. Immediate investigation revealed the fire was contained to the chimney with no extension to the surrounding structural elements of the home. The fire was extinguished using portable water extinguishers and inspection by thermal imaging camera confirmed lack of any "hotspots." The fire was reported out at 0653 and Smithfield VFD units were cleared to be available and returned to Station-50. Carrollton firefighters removed and doused all burned materials from the fireplace and the homeowner was advised to have the chimney and fireplace inspected for any hidden damage. All Carrollton units were clear and available by 0719 to return to Station-10.
