Carrollton Volunteer Fire department was dispatched 0719 Wednesday 13 February 2013 to a reported motor vehicle collision in the southbound lane of the James River Bridge between the draw span and the small boat channel. Carrollton VFD unit Chief-10 was first on scene and reported six vehicles involved including an ambulance from a local patient transport service and one BLS trauma patient. City of Newport News Fire Department was also notified and responded with fire and rescue apparatus. Carrollton VFD units Rescue-10 and Squad-10 responded to the scene though heavy rush-hour traffic along the northbound lane. R-10 established scene protection and S-10 arrived to transport one patient to a local emergency trauma center. All Carrollton units were cleared from the scene by 0902 but R-10 had to return to Carrollton via the Monitor-Merrimac Bridge Tunnel due to congestion on the James River Bridge caused by the multi-vehicle MVC.
