Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched 1201Thursday 31 January 2013 by "fourth alarm" to provide assistance to units arriving on scene at a residential structure fire on Track Lane in the Rushmere section of northern Isle of Wight County. Isle of Wight Central Dispatch reported all occupants were safely out of the house. Rushmere VFD, Smithfield VFD and Isle of Wight VRS responded initially and first arriving unit reported heavy smoke showing from a single story building. Isle of Wight Emergency Services and Sheriff's Department units also quickly arrived. Rushmere VFD Engine-32 crew deployed hand lines to the structure and crews from Rushmere Tanker-30 and Smithfield Engines-52 and -50 initiated a rapid fire attack. A ground ladder was emplaced to enable attack crews to ventilate the roof area above the fire. Rushmere fireground command reported the fire under control at 1211and a Dominion Power crew arrived to secure the electrical connection to the structure. Smithfield unit Rescue-50 and Carrollton Engine-10 crews assisted with the extensive overhaul operation to ensure all traces of flammable material were removed from the area exposed to the fire. American Red Cross volunteers were requested and arrived to provide temporary shelter and provisions to the occupants of the home. All fire and rescue units were cleared from the scene by 1326.
