First-response volunteers of Carrollton Volunteer Fire Dept. participated in the annual "Day of Remembrance and Honor" ceremony Sunday 9 September 2012 in the "Garden of Honor" at the south foot of the James River Bridge. Sponsored and organized by Grace Keen, President, Isle of Wight Citizens Association, the ceremony recognized representative first responders from all law enforcement, medical rescue and fire response agencies in Isle of Wight County who were honored and celebrated for their service to the local community. Official line-of-duty deaths of Isle of Wight officials were also remembered including Chief Claud Taylor and Firefighter J.P. Memory of Carrollton VFD. Guest speakers included; Carter Williams, Mayor of Smithfield, Rick Morris, Delegate to the Virginia General Assembly, Al Casteen, Chairman of the Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors, Carita Richardson, Mayor of Windsor and Mark Marshall, Sheriff of Isle of Wight County. The ceremony featured patriotic music by the Smithfield High School Band, patriotic songs by the Smithfield HS Chorus, solo by Harry Cassell, flag raising and pledge of allegiance by Boy Scout Troop 3 and Invocation and Benediction by Chaplain Judy Worrell of Carrollton VFD. A low level flyby by a medical evacuation transport helicopter of LifeEvac was also part of the event.
